It’s time for the NT to take gamba seriously
We all know the threats posed by gamba grass in the Territory. We’ve seen firefighters, landholders and communities battle against the increased intensity of gamba grass fires across the Top End.
But if you look at the NT budget released just this week, it seems like the politicians haven’t got the message. They’ve allocated only $720,000 for gamba grass control efforts on crown land – nowhere remotely near what’s needed to protect properties and lives.
Gamba grass threatens our lives, homes and landscapes. We need to tackle gamba seriously.
Clearly, this Government understands the value of supporting tourism – they’re investing heavily in what makes our home great, and what drives so many people to visit. But without adequate funding to protect the very landscapes that draw tourists to the NT, these places will be devastated by gamba grass.
The community is crying out for the Government to step up action at the scale that’s required to stop the spread of gamba grass before it’s too late.
It’s time to re-double our efforts in the community, to have that conversation with a neighbour, talk directly with Territory politicians to tell them clearly what’s needed to protect lives, homes and landscapes this year and beyond.
With you, and your ongoing efforts and commitment to tackling gamba grass we will turn the tide against gamba grass – because the future of the Territory is worth it.
Save the date – Sunday 26 May – We’ll be having a supporter get together to talk about the next steps in our campaign for increased gamba action.
